Since the work of Ocana, Hartog, Brito and Bos, published in 2010, this species was known as Paracorynactis hoplites. Rowlett (2020), in his magnificent book "Indo-Pacific Corals", showed that this large corallimorph most probably belongs to another, undescribed species and suggested new generic and species name for it: Megacorynactis giganteus.
