Long vermiform body of this burrowing anemone is usually hidden in sand and only a crown of 12 long tentacles is visible on the surface. Several species of the genus Halcampoides have been described, but most were then included into cosmopolitan (very widely distributed) species: Halcampoides purpurea. Halcampoides purpurea, however, appears to be a complex of several species and requires a revision.
